The source "Hugo's monologue in The Garden Party," (1963) was performed initially in the Czech Republic during a time of political unrest, in my personal experience political unrest often brings up themes of race, probably due to watching the build-up and social justice Black lives matter movement of that was prominent in 2020. Race brings up issues of identity as I am a biracial person raised in Canada with a caucasian mom and a Kenyan Dad. As a child, I felt Canadian, to the point that it almost overwrote other parts of my identity. At the same time, I wanted so much to be proud of my Kenyan heritage. These two parts of my upbringing greatly influenced my identity, and it often felt as though they were fighting against one another. My hair, being one part of my African heritage that is next to impossible to hide. It is also the thing that people seem to be most drawn to, the part that seems the most exotic, perhaps it is because it is so large. As a child people, sometimes complete strangers, seemed to believe they were entitled to access to my hair, often resulting in people I didn't know touching me, touching my hair, pulling at it, oooing and ahhing over it. I am sure others viewed it as a compliment, but I saw it and still do as individuals denying my body autonomy, it felt as though I was curious being, never seen before.
